THE FOLLOWING IS IN RED TYPE TO STRESS IT'S IMPORTANCE
It's always preferable that the fisherman/woman make contact with me rather than an intermediary.
Take a minute on my FAQ page (Especially Fly-fishing Experience) as this will help your and my planning.
NB When advising Paddy of your fly-fishing skill-level please be honest and realistic, if you just possess downstream fishing skills (Swinging flies) please say so, do not assume you can master the more advanced upstream dry-fly or nymph approach as they are a world apart, properly executed upstream fly-fishing is a massive step-up from downstream fly-fishing and is a skill perfected over time. This matters as it helps choose a location to match your skill-level, we could lose an hour switching venues if you overstate your skill level.
Skill-level - Generally, 1-20 FULL DAYS + INSTRUCTION = BEGINNER 20-50 FULL DAYS = IMPROVER/NOVICE, 50-100 FULL DAYS = INTERMEDIATE, 100+DAYS=EXPERIENCED
In high summer (June-Sept) water levels get low, rivers get weeded and fly fishing is challenging even for the best, so it might be preferable to opt for a half-day rather than full day session unless one is a master in upstream presentation of dry-fly or nymph. I use a tidal stretch of the river Maigue to overcome
rare low water summer levels by fishing the ebb tide, a plan B which avoids cancellations. Fishing times are subject to tide times however.
Update: Even with the advantage of a high level during a receding tide, this stretch now is subject to heavy weed in August/September, this is again due to prolonged drier conditions during late summer as a result of climate change.
Climate Change and impact on river trout fishing in Ireland......conditions, conditions, conditions!
Summer always means a reduction in water levels, dry spells etc, this has been more apparent in the past 5+ years and in general we can have low water levels as early as mid-May. April/May/June sees good levels with clear, pacy runs which have not yet weeded . July/August/September brings challenging fly-fishing, low levels, weed build-up and ultra-shy wild trout, this demands advanced upriver fly-fishing skills. Do bear all this in mind when planning.
This is a general trend/observation to inform you, but weather is unpredictable by nature, and cancellation is free when conditions are testing.
Very often the issue is that I get holidaymakers who want to flyfish rather than flyfishers who are also holidaying, more especially from July-September when one needs to be an all-round flyfisher with considerable experience in upstream dry-fly or nymph, i.e. wild trout in wild rivers on wild locations.
